For over 20 years, Long Island City has been slowly evolving from a manufacturing district to a diversified sub-center of New York City. The City has promulgated compelling vision of a mixed-use commercial and residential core surrounded by artists studios and light manufacturing, yet it remains largely unfulfilled. Zoning changes have had some effect but have been unable to establish a real foothold due to the ebb and flow of economic cycles. Although mass transit service is excellent, many workers still commute by automobile, and the area remains more of a transit interchange than a destination.
