Weil Townhouse
Greenwich Village, New York

An open-riser stair, half-oval in plan, dynamically winds upwards through the house. The stair acts as a “light shaft”, allowing both natural illumination from the skylight above, and the glow from the rear-lit glass panels set in stair walls, to filter through the house. These recessed lights were designed to feature images by the owner, a photographer, who used the stair as a vertical gallery for her work. A small skylit room at the top of the stair opens up to the private roof garden.
