Midtown Pied-a-Terre
New York

This pied-a-terre was designed for a couple living in Europe who wanted a serene and urbane refuge in New York during their frequent stays there. The upper floor apartment is in a 1924 courtyard building located on the eastern edge of Midtown Manhattan, with far-reaching views down the East River.

The original apartment had been designed as a tenement with many small rooms and while having been previously altered, still had a closed-in feeling. The solution was to open up the kitchen, creating free-flowing loft-like space, while still maintaining discreet living and working zones and a private bedroom in the rear. Materials were selected to convey a sense of serenity and warmth.
