Central Park West Apartment

This grand pre-war apartment, with wrap-around terraces and extensive views, is perched high above the park in one of the premier buildings on Central Park West.

The clients, a New York couple, undertook the renovation with the goal of creating a contemporary esthetic environment that still retained some of the original spirit of the 1920’s building. They also needed a space suitable for both their informal lifestyle and for more formal social functions. And, very importantly, it had to provide a showcase for the client’s impressive collection of contemporary art.

The apartment was completely renovated, including new mechanical systems. The existing plan was partially modified to improve spatial flow and to accommodate the clients’ specific needs. The kitchen and service quarters were combined into a large eat-in kitchen that doubles as an informal living space. The finishes and lighting were selected with the aim of creating a subtle yet rich backdrop for the art, and the terraces planted to establish a more intimate connection with the greenery of the park below.
