THE CONCOURSE TRANSFORMED
A linear park for residents that belongs to the residential/pedestrian rather than the traffic realm, yet also serves as a transit conduit.
Healthy vegetation is promoted with trees planted outside the subway tunnel zone.
The park is more secure because of its greater visibility and direct adjacency to the residential buildings.
Courtyard entrances, a common Concourse typology, become extensions of the park and mediating zones between the public and private spheres.
The park becomes an extended "front yard" for the residents of the building.
The presence of the median, currently a barrier between the two sides of the Concourse, is downplayed.
The median is extended over the minor cross streets to reduce traffic and to emphasize the continuity of the promenade.

NEIGHBORHOOD INTERSECTIONS
Neighborhood Intersections, located at intervals within a reasonable walking distance from the surrounding communities, will encourage pedestrian activity and become focal points linking the Concourse to the adjacent neighborhoods.
These intersections will typically be located at the existing grade-separated street crossings, most of which already have subway stations and express and cross-town bus stops. Taxi and private car or bus service stands will also be provided, along with secure bicycle storage, thereby reinforcing intermodal transportation at these intersections.
These corner sites will be re-zoned to allow for the establishment of street-level commercial activity, creating a multi-purpose destination for residents of the community.
Green islands equipped with benches will be built on the widened overpasses to maintain the continuity of the linear park experience.
THE BRONX GATE
Create a gateway at 138th Street by building a pair of taller commercial buildings whose facades will be used as tag walls by Bronx muralists
Remove the Major Deegan Expressway ramp
Relocate the subway entrance to the Gate
Establish a link to the future Harlem River Park
Create a green forecourt to the Concourse
Extend the street wall of the Concourse up to 153rd Street with an infill of new commercial buildings
LANDMARK INTERSECTIONS - CIVIC CENTER
This intersection is already well defined by the Bronx County Building, The nearby Courts, and the formal landscaping
Reinforce the pedestrian connection to the Yankee Stadium and the new recreational fields
LANDMARK INTERSECTIONS - CLAREMONT PARK
Reinforce the existing link to Claremont Park
Build basketball courts for special tournaments on Mt. Eden Parkway
Create a wide median with a fountain to mark a special public place and to link the green spaces across the Concourse
LANDMARK INTERSECTIONS - FORDHAM MARKET
Strengthen the existing commercial district that already has convenient links to mass transit
Create a commercial arcade by spanning the Fordham Road intersection with a dramatic cross-shaped glass canopy
Divert vehicular traffic on weekends to allow the arcade to become a farmers' market
LANDMARK INTERSECTIONS - PARK GATE
Create a view corridor to the open parkland beyond
Define the urban edge on the west side of the Concourse with a new residential block similar in scale to the neighboring buildings
Mark the terminus of the Concourse with a large-scale public sculpture set in a field of green
